Vinted seller equipment: thermal printer, steamer, and the rest

8 August 2026 · 7 min read

You can sell on Vinted with a phone and a roll of tape. But past a few dozen items a month, it is the repeated gestures that decide your hourly margin: folding, steaming, weighing, photographing, printing, sticking. Here is the kit that genuinely saves time, in the order in which it pays for itself.

1. The thermal label printer — the first real step up

This is the purchase that changes a regular seller's life the most. A thermal printer (4×6 inch, about 100×150 mm) prints a shipping label in 3 seconds, with no ink and no cartridge: the paper is heat-sensitive. No more smudging inkjet, cut-up A4 sheets and tape all over the label.

  • Budget: £70-130 for a USB model, a bit more for Bluetooth. Labels cost 2 to 4 pence each in rolls of 500.
  • Payback: 1 to 2 minutes saved per parcel, and zero cartridges. At 40 parcels a month, the printer pays for itself in 3 to 4 months on consumables alone.
  • Check before buying: that it prints your carrier's PDF without proprietary software, and that it handles the 4×6 format — the standard for Mondial Relay, Evri, Royal Mail and InPost labels.
The detail that matters: print the item SKU directly on the label. At packing time you know which garment goes in which parcel without reopening your phone — that is exactly where mis-sends happen, and a mis-send costs a refund plus a lost item.

2. The steamer — what actually sells the photo

A creased garment sells for less and slower. It is the only "photo equipment" with a direct, measurable effect on price.

  • Handheld garment steamer (£25-50): fast, no board, perfect for knitwear, dresses and anything that fears a hot plate. The most profitable first buy.
  • Steam generator iron (£100-220): worth it past 100 items a month. Large water tank, continuous steam, 20 pieces without refilling.
  • The habit that pays: steam before the photo session, not before shipping. The buyer buys the photo, not the parcel.

3. Scales — the cheapest and most profitable

A £12 kitchen scale is enough. Getting the weight bracket wrong means either paying a surcharge or having your parcel refused at the drop-off point. Weigh with the final packaging, and record the weight on the item: after a few months you know the typical weight of each category and pick the right bracket without weighing.

4. Lighting and background

No need for a studio. In order of effectiveness:

  • Daylight near a window: free, and better than 90% of cheap lamps.
  • A plain background (white sheet, light wall, floor mat: £0-20): consistency of background makes a shop look professional far more than camera quality.
  • Two LED lights with adjustable temperature (£45-70): only if you shoot in the evening or in batches. Set both to the same colour temperature, or your photos will turn yellow or blue.

5. Packaging

Buy in bulk: recycled poly mailers or kraft paper (5 to 12 pence each per 100), a wide tape roll, and a few padded envelopes for fragile items. Tissue paper and a handwritten note cost pennies and weigh heavily in your reviews — and your reviews drive your future sales.

6. What not to buy yet

  • A DSLR: a recent phone in good light beats a poorly handled DSLR.
  • A dressmaker's mannequin: useful past 200 items a month, pointless before — a hanger on a light wall does the job.
  • A separate label maker: your thermal printer already handles storage labels.

And the real "tool" everyone forgets

Hardware saves minutes per parcel. What saves hours per month is not re-entering your sales: knowing without searching what has sold, what is left to ship, what each item actually earned, and pulling your figures out when it is time to file. These equipment purchases are also deductible expenses — provided you wrote them down somewhere. In Fripilot you enter them once as costs, and they are deducted from your result automatically.
